Healthy Guacamole

Healthy Guacamole

Free of unhealthy additives and oils. Guacamole is a staple for parties and having friends over, but unfortunately it’s often high in sodium and filled with unhealthy ingredients.

One of my favorite snacks to eat at a restaurant is guacamole and chips. It’s typically one of the most inexpensive appetizers on the menu, and it’s always super tasty.

It always made an appearance at parties and social gatherings–it literally popped up everywhere. It’s one of my favorite dips to eat with chips and vegetables, but store-bought guacamole isn’t always the healthiest to eat.

Homemade Guacamole

This guacamole is clean and nutritious. I absolutely LOVE guacamole, but when you buy it from the store, it’s often packed full of sodium. While I’m not too worried about sodium for myself, I know that many people struggle with high blood pressure and heart disease. Thus, I wanted to make a guacamole recipe that was healthy and low in sodium.

There are so many ways that you can make guacamole, but I have found that spices make a world of a difference. You don’t even need salt at all to make guacamole taste good. This recipe is oil-free and has very little sodium, which is mostly from the garlic powder. However, you barely need any garlic powder for this recipe, so it’s essentially sodium-free.

The Key Ingredient: Lime Juice

If you’ve never tried adding lime juice to guacamole, it’s a must. It’s super flavorful and is the essential ingredient to turn the guac from a 5/10 to a 10/10. I was SHOCKED by how amazing this turned out. I might be a little biased, but I honestly believe that this is the BEST guacamole that I have ever had before. It’s fresh, healthy, simple, and raw. It’s also 100% plant-based and guilt-free. You won’t be disappointed with this recipe.

How long does it take to make?

One of the great things about this guacamole recipe is that it takes no time at all to make. It only takes about 5-10 minutes to make, depending on how fast you are at chopping up the onions and tomatoes.

All you have to do is throw the ingredients together in a bowl and let it chill if you like your guacamole a bit colder. It’s super easy and one of my favorite snacks to make when I’m short on time.

Things you’ll need for this recipe:

1. Ripe Avocados

The first ingredient you’ll need to make this guacamole is avocados. The best avocados to use are the ones that are a little squishy. If the avocados are hard, the guacamole won’t taste as good. So, use the soft avocados!

Avocados are full of essential nutrients and have numerous health benefits. A fun fact is that an avocado is actually a fruit! I always thought in the past that fruits had to be sweet, but turns out I was wrong. Believe it or not, avocados are not categorized as a vegetable.

I love making homemade guacamole because it always tastes so fresh and healthy when you make it yourself as opposed to buying it from a fast food place or restaurant. When you make it yourself, you know exactly what ingredients are in it.

2. Chopped Onion

Next up is onion. I like to chop the onion into small pieces because onion has a very strong and distinct flavor. This recipe only calls for a tablespoon of onion because I don’t like my guacamole super spicy.

However, if you love onion, you can certainly add a bit more to this guacamole. Either way, onion is a crucial ingredient that helps give the guacamole a nice flavor.

3. Chopped Tomato

The next ingredient you’ll need is tomato. Tomato is a staple ingredient in guacamole recipes. I don’t think I’ve ever had guacamole without tomatoes in it. It’s seriously an underrated vegetable. Like avocados, tomatoes have numerous health benefits. It’s also a fruit, which is a little bit surprising. Although they taste a bit sweet, I never understood why they were categorized as a fruit as opposed to a vegetable.

Adding tomato to your guacamole also helps give it some more color. When I was younger, people would always talk about eating a colorful plate, so I’m trying to emulate the “colorful plate” idea in some of my recipes.

4. Lime Juice

Lime juice is seriously the key ingredient to make guacamole. I’ve tried making guacamole both with and without lime juice, and it never tastes as good without the lime juice.

The lime gives the guacamole a nice lime flavor, and with all the spices and other ingredients mixed together, it tastes absolutely incredible. If you haven’t tried adding lime juice to your guacamole, you’ve truly been missing out. Next time you’re in the mood for guacamole, I highly recommend adding a bit of lime juice to it. It’s the absolute best way to make it.

5. Garlic Powder

Up next is garlic powder. It’s a super flavorful spice that gives the guacamole a nice salty/garlic flavor. I use garlic powder for a number of my recipes because it helps to make any dish 10x more flavorful.

Some recipes I’ve made with garlic powder:

1. Tofu Breakfast Scramble

2. Creamy Vegan Alfredo Pasta

6. Basil Flakes

The last ingredient you’ll need for this guacamole is basil flakes. I actually didn’t put basil flakes in the guacamole, but rather, sprinkled it on top as a garnish.

Let’s get into the recipe.
