Blueberry Chia Seed Jelly

Blueberry Chia Seed Jelly

A guilt-free version of your favorite blueberry jelly. If you love jelly as much as I do, then this recipe is for you. I wanted to make a jelly with no-added sugar as well as a healthier alternative to traditional jams and jellies sold at grocery stores.

Store Bought Jelly

I used to eat oatmeal for breakfast with peanut butter and grape jelly. I didn’t have it every day for breakfast, but I had it quite often. I always had the grape jelly you could buy at the store on my oatmeal, and it tasted more like dessert than an actual breakfast.

I later found out that most jellies have a ton of added sugar. The one I had been eating for years had around 12 grams of added sugar for one serving–and I probably had more than one serving of jelly. I would pile the peanut butter and jelly on my oatmeal, thinking I was eating a healthy and nutritious breakfast.

In reality, the breakfast I was eating wasn’t very healthy at all. It was full of sugar and not a great way to start my day. I’m a strong believer in eating a low sugar breakfast because you don’t function as well if you start your day with a breakfast that’s high in sugar.

After I found out how much sugar was actually in jelly, I stopped buying it and started eating my oatmeal with fruit instead of jelly. It was more nutritious and didn’t have added sugar. Natural sugar that’s in fruit is perfectly fine, but if you’re having an excess of added sugar, that’s not the best for your health.

Homemade Jelly

Because I was no longer buying store bought jelly, I wanted to make a healthy jelly at home that had no sugar added. I simply wanted to make a blueberry chia seed jelly that only had natural sugar from the blueberries.

Blueberry and strawberry jelly are my two-favorite jellies. I already made a strawberry jelly concoction, so it was time to create a blueberry jelly recipe. This recipe is refined sugar-free and guilt-free. There is NO table sugar or artificial sweetners. The sweetness comes from fruit alone.

It might not be as sweet as you’re used to, BUT it is so much healthier than traditional jelly. I’m a strong believer in using fruit as a sweetener in place of table sugar and sugar alternatives like stevia.

How long does it take to make?

This blueberry chia seed jelly recipe is super quick and easy to make. You don’t need much time at all to throw this jelly together. It only takes about five minutes to prep it, and then you let it sit overnight in a sealed jar so that it can stiffen up a bit.

I like to make the jelly at night so it’s ready to go in the morning. All I do is put the jelly mixture in a mason jar and pop it in the fridge so it’s nice and chilled.

What can you put this jelly on?

Some of my favorite foods to put this blueberry jelly on is toast, English muffins, and pancakes.

If I have toast or an English muffin, I typically add a layer of peanut butter and jelly on the toast. I’ll sometimes add some more cinnamon on top to bring out the flavor even more.

If I have oatmeal, I always have peanut butter and this blueberry jelly. It’s super delicious and one of my favorite breakfasts to have. Oatmeal is super filling and is a great pre or post-workout meal to have to fuel my body with.

If I have pancakes, I’ll usually add peanut butter and jelly to it. Sometimes I’ll also have fruit–it depends how hungry I am.

Ingredients you’ll need for this recipe:

1. Fresh or Frozen Blueberries

The main ingredient you’ll need for this blueberry chia seed jelly is fresh or frozen blueberries. Both frozen and fresh blueberries will work great for this recipe. I used fresh blueberries because that’s all I had lying around in my fridge, but frozen blueberries will work just as well.

Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and have many health benefits. They’re one of my favorite fruits to eat and I always add them to my oatmeal. Oatmeal with peanut butter and blueberries is my go-to breakfast that I pretty much have every single morning before my workout.

2. Chia Seeds

The next ingredient you’ll need is chia seeds. Chia seeds are really healthy and have numerous health benefits. I like to add chia seeds to my home-made jellies and smoothies because you can’t even taste them, but they add more nutritional value to your meal.

3. Cinnamon

The last ingredient you’ll need for this recipe is cinnamon. Cinnamon is another ingredient that like chia seeds, I try and add to everything I can. Any breakfast and dessert recipe I make likely has cinnamon in it because it’s another ingredient that has health benefits.
